THE CLIENT:
The County of Monterey Agricultural Commissioner’s Office, which produces an annual crop and livestock report highlighting the county’s agricultural economic impact, commodity breakdowns, and crop valuations. This report is shared state-wide and used as official data to measure gross production values, farming trends, and evaluate economic impacts.
THE CHALLENGE:
The Agricultural Commissioner requested full creative direction, graphic design support, and complex data organization to elevate their annual report while adhering to operational constraints:
• Data Integrity: Seamlessly formatting and integrating extensive data charts without altering, distorting, or misrepresenting official agricultural statistics.
• Bilingual Accessibility: Producing dual, fully localized versions in both English and Spanish to ensure clarity and accessibility across the entire agricultural community.
• Statewide Benchmark Standards: Ensuring the design and data presentation met a standard suitable for distribution across California to inform county-to-county comparative research.
THE SOLUTION:
To address these challenges, TMD leveraged our expertise to apply strategic visual prototyping and advanced publishing workflows:
• Visual Discovery: TMD initiated a discovery phase using visual style guides, allowing stakeholders to refine and approve the
report’s aesthetics early on, ensuring complete alignment on creative direction before committing major design hours.
• Dynamic Data: To protect data figures, TMD created a specialized table design system. Working hand-in-hand with county analysts to format raw statistics into polished, custom-built tables. We established review checkpoints to verify county records while improving legibility.
• Print Processes: TMD managed final quality checks, exporting high-resolution, press-ready PDFs to ensure a smooth sign-off process for on-time distribution statewide.
